One of my favorite places to go on the Carolina coast is the Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar in Carolina Beach.
It’s a tiny bar and seafood shack along North Lake Park Boulevard. It’s worth the standing room or, if you are lucky enough, sliding onto one of the stools. There is always a fine selection of sports to watch and friendly wait staff.
They have just a few items on the menu – fresh shrimp, oysters, chicken fingers and sides like hushpuppies and mini corn dogs. We always order a pound of Old Bay steamed shrimp to share and some hushpuppies. It is heaven on a platter.
To wash it all down, they have a wide variety of beers by the bottle, killer $5 Bloody Marys and other drink specials. I love the mix of spicy shrimp and their spicy Bloody Mary – mmmm, mmm!
The service is pretty slow, so order a couple of rounds of drinks and sit back and relax. We have gone twice, once in March and on the 4th of July and haven’t had trouble getting at seat, but I imagine it could get very busy.
We first found The Shack on a trip in March 2010. We ambled in on a chilly, but relaxing day to hear the waves and feel the profound connectedness of our earth’s ocean. For lunch which stretched into dinner, we ambled into the restaurant to find the locals watching the Winter Olympics men’s hockey gold medal round – USA vs. Canada. They were enthusiastic and rooting loudly for the teams. There were Canadian and USA fans at the tiny bar. Brian was overjoyed, so we took a seat at the bar ordered a pound of fresh shrimp, rounds of Bloody Marys and beer, and stayed for the entire game. It was the best game I’ve ever watched. There was something welcoming and ironic about two Colorado kids finding a bar full of enthusiastic hockey fans on the Carolina coast. It was an experience that we’ll treasure forever.
For fresh seafood, good drinks and a memorable evening, I recommend the Shuckin Shack!
